The Waterpik Water Flosser: Everything You Need to Know

We can all admit that flossing isn’t always fun. That doesn’t mean we can skip this all-important task. Luckily, there’s a way to make flossing easier, faster, and more fun: the Waterpik® Water Flosser.

Flossing Is Essential for a Healthy Mouth Did you know that if you don’t floss you miss cleaning 35 percent of the tooth surface in your mouth? If you forgo flossing, all that leftover bacteria eats away at your teeth, causing cavities and decay.

If traditional flossing isn’t easy for you, the Waterpik Water Flosser is your perfect solution. You simply floss with a jet stream of water instead of string!

Who Benefits from the Waterpik Water Flosser? The answer is simple: everyone! Whether you have gum disease, dexterity issues that make it hard to floss, you wear orthodontic appliances or have implants, bridges or crowns, or you’re just looking to shake things up, the Waterpik Water Flosser is for you.

  • It’s easy: Using the Waterpik, flossing is easier than string flossing. Just point the flosser tip between your teeth and along the gum-line and let it do all the work for you.
  • It’s fast: It only takes about a minute a day!
  • It’s effective: The Waterpik removes plaque and debris that lurks deep between the teeth and below the gum-line where it’s hard for traditional brushing and flossing to reach.

Why We Recommend Waterpik to Our Patients

After a patient undergoes periodontal surgery the goal then is to keep disease out of the mouth and help the gum tissue rejuvenated, if at all possible. After each surgery the patient is given full homecare instructions on how to prevent and maintain their mouth.  Dr. Nemeth highly recommends the Waterpik Water Flosser for general oral health care but, especially after periodontal surgery.  In addition to brushing and flossing the Waterpik is a great tool to help keep bacteria away from the gum-line and in between the teeth.  Dr. Nemeth’s specific instructions on how to use the Waterpik are as follows:

Concentrate the jet of the Waterpik between teeth for a count of 10.  Be sure to aim the jet straight between the teeth – not at the gum tissue.  Use the Waterpik twice a day.  (Note: Start at the lowest pressure level and gradually work your way up, increasing the pressure every 3-4 days, until you reach the highest pressure level.)

Following these directions for the Waterpik will ensure that you are correctly using the device to help keep your gums healthy and clean.

Dr. Nemeth also has a special recipe to help reduce the bacteria load if you are currently struggling with periodontal disease.  The recipe is as follows:  Combine 1 capful of Clorox Bleach with a full reservoir of water in the Waterpik.

*Pro-Tip* Look for Lemon Scented Bleach as this will help ease the taste.
