The History of LANAP

Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) is a minimally invasive gum disease treatment procedure. LANAP, which was developed in the late 1990s, has revolutionized the treatment of gum disease by providing patients with a more comfortable, less invasive, and faster-healing alternative to conventional procedures.

Gum disease, commonly known as periodontitis, is a progressive and deadly disorder that affects the gums, bones, and tissues that support the teeth. In the past, gum disease was often treated surgically by removing infected or damaged tissue and reshaping the remaining tissue to facilitate healing. These treatments were typically unpleasant, involved considerable postoperative recovery time, and resulted in severe loss of tissue.

In the late 1990s, Dr. Robert H. Gregg II and his team developed LANAP as a solution to address the limitations of standard periodontal therapies. The surgery utilizes a specialized laser to destroy sick tissue selectively while leaving healthy tissue untouched. This results in a less invasive surgical procedure that is quicker, less painful, and causes much less tissue loss than conventional procedures.

Utilizing a carefully constructed laser, LANAP targets and eliminates diseased tissue. Laser energy coagulates contaminated tissue, occluding blood vessels and halting bleeding. Additionally, the laser stimulates the creation of new tissue, which expedites the healing process and enhances the gums’ overall health.

Over the past two decades, LANAP has become widely acknowledged as a safe and effective alternative to standard periodontal therapies. It is great for those seeking a less painful and faster-healing solution to gum disease because of its less invasive nature. Extensive research indicates that the technique is beneficial for treating a variety of periodontal disorders, including mild to severe gum disease.

Dr. Joseph Nemeth, an experienced and licensed periodontist in Southfield, Michigan, provides LANAP as a treatment option to his patients. Dr. Nemeth was one of the earliest credentialed and approved adopters of this revolutionary technology. Patients from all over the country come to Dr. Nemeth’s practice to take advantage of the benefits of LANAP, including enhanced patient comfort, reduced postoperative discomfort, and shorter healing times.
